After viewing Mama Hope’s video, “Alex Presents Commando,” Gabriel, Benard, Brian and Derrik (the Kenyan men in this video) told us they wanted to make one that pokes fun at the way African men are portrayed in Hollywood films. They said, “If people believed only what they saw in movies, they would think we are all warlords who love violence.” They, like Mama Hope, are tired of the over-sensationalized, one-dimensional depictions of African men and the white savior messaging that permeates our media. They wanted to tell their own stories instead, so we handed them the mic and they made this video. I’m African born and raised in Africa but living in the US, the reason the Africans in Africa? have no “chips on their shoulders” is because they don’t have to put up with crap and looked down on because of their skin color cause they are the majority. Having experienced both life in Africa and here in the US i can say this country can surely break a black person’s spirit. So don’t be so quick to judge. And judging a whole group of people is stupid cause clearly you haven’t met all black people.

It’s definitely? not racism, I’m Australian and a terrible number of Americans think that kangaroos jump down our city streets, koalas are cuddly enough to be kept as pets, and we all live like Crocodile Dundee.
Stories need good guys and bad guys, and the good guy will almost always represent the target audience (it kinda has to) So, if it’s an international story, made for white American males (which most of the popular movies are), the rest of us end up the villains.
