it will? last till the top 1-2 inches of sand gets mucked up with filth then scoop off the top layer or layers then your good to go once again filtering water and to clean the sand that you need to replace simply boil it in some clean water while stirring it let the sand settle to the bottom pour off the now dirty water place your sand back in the bio-sand filter

Hate to break it to you, but you just cleaned your sand. And still have contaminated water.
The space between the grains of sand is no where near small enough to begin to filter out microorganisms that measure in the range of microns.
Many? “survival” guides use things like this because they make for pretty pictures. Charcoal won’t help, been there done that. All that does is give you black water and clean charcoal.
Get the floaters out of your water with a handkerchief then boil it.

I was probably drunk when? I made that comment… Anyway, I was responding to the ending of the video that sounded like he was offering some kind of new technology that has never been heard of before and needed us to spread the word to the world. The world had been using this technique before the industrial age. Sadly, it has been mostly forgotten since it’s generally unnecessary. It still pops up in nearly every media about “SHTF”, so the end bit was a drunk-enraging “go advertise my video”.

What type of bacteria is it that eats the harmful bacteria?? And how do you clean out the bio sand filter of all the particulate matter that gets trapped in there b/c eventually won’t it get clogged up like your kitchen sink strainer?

Charred wood is Carbon- Carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine and other chemicals, sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. They are not good at removing minerals, salts, and dissolved inorganic compounds. Thats where the sand and small rocks and fine screens like cotton t-shirt helps, then boil if you can if your still? not sure. Other wise should be ok or better than dehydration.

I think it is? the activ zone, where the good bacteria livs and most of the filtering is done.

…more embarrassing science fiction. Modern science is? still in the Dark Ages. The moon was actually the small iron-silica core to a former gas giant planet named Kingu (all the gas giants have tiny solid cores), according the Ancient Babylonian record, Enûma Eliš, and it dwarfed Jupiter, the 2nd largest planet. Kingu had its gas envelope torn away during a cosmocataclysm of a nebula event and the core was hurled at the Earth which caught it in gravitational orbit.
