Thanks for the illustration, just a question about reamers, what are their main uses? i’m aware they smooth the hole but do they prevent deviation of the drill string? Are they to maintain the size of the? wellbore? cheers.

That is a stabilizer (Guiding fins you refer to) in the animation and none of that is in the hole when running casing.? Unless you are thinking of casing while drilling, which this video has nothing to do with.

for some reason it won’t let me reply to a previous statement which is that drilling mud is used to keep gases and oil down. your correct in conventional drilling but completely wrong in my world which is UBD under balanced drilling where you want you hydro-static less than the formation pressure so the? well blows out and produces while drilling. this is used for very sensitive wells that you couldn’t normally keep circulation on. it’s pretty much a flow back setup.

if oil really was as close as they say to running out…? surely every push now would be towards finding other ways to fuel. Yet there sticking to the same boring hybrid design.
Building the toyota prius produced more carbon emissions than it makes. Hence why they shouldnt bother!

Main functions are to maintain hydrostatic pressure in the wellbore to keep the high pressure oil and gas out so it doesn’t reach surface uncontrolled ie. blowout. And yes, to remove cuttings. Cooling and lubing the bit happens, but it is not something that is taken into consideration when selecting mud, it isn’t necessary. You can drill with air which doesn’t do nearly as much cooling or? lubing, or prevent a well from collapsing.
